Let’s Talk Maintenance

A beautiful hairstyle is only half the journey. Proper maintenance is what keeps your hair looking fresh, protects your natural hair underneath, and helps you get the maximum lifespan out of your style.

Whether you’re wearing cornrows, braids, a sleek ponytail, or a sew-in, investing a little time into maintenance will keep your hair healthy, your scalp comfortable, and your style looking salon-fresh for longer.

Cainrows

Recommended wear time: 3–4 weeks

Cainnrows are one of the most versatile and low-maintenance protective styles. While some clients can wear them for longer, we generally recommend replacing them after 3–4 weeks to maintain a neat appearance and ensure your scalp remains healthy.

Daily Maintenance

  • Tie your hair down every night using a satin scarf or satin durag.
  • Wear a shower cap while bathing to avoid unnecessary moisture exposure.
  • Oil your scalp regularly to maintain hydration and support a healthy scalp environment.
  • Avoid excessive product buildup.

Why Oiling Your Scalp Matters

Your scalp is skin, and like the skin on the rest of your body, it needs moisture. Protective styles leave sections of your scalp exposed to air, weather conditions, and sunlight, which can cause dryness over time.

Regular oiling helps:

  • Reduce itchiness and dryness
  • Minimise flaking and dandruff
  • Support healthy hair growth
  • Maintain scalp comfort while wearing protective styles

Washing Your Cainrows

Many people avoid washing protective styles, but a clean scalp is essential for healthy hair growth.

We recommend washing your cainrows around the second or third week.

When washing:

  1. Use a hydrating shampoo to cleanse the scalp without stripping away moisture.
  2. Follow with a hydrating conditioner to restore softness and hydration.
  3. Rinse thoroughly.
  4. Apply a lightweight mousse to smooth flyaways and reduce frizz.
  5. Oil your scalp.
  6. Tie your hair down with a satin durag or scarf overnight.

By morning, your cainrows should look refreshed, smoother, and more polished.

After Removal

Once your cainrows are removed, we recommend giving your hair a short break of 2–3 days before installing your next protective style. This allows your scalp and hairline time to breathe and recover.

Braids (Knotless, Boho & Extension Styles)

Recommended wear time: 4–8 weeks

Braids can often last even longer depending on your maintenance routine, hair growth rate, and the style chosen. However, keeping them fresh requires consistent care.

Daily Maintenance

  • Tie your braids down every night.
  • Use a satin bonnet, satin scarf, or satin durag.
  • Sleep on a satin pillowcase as an additional layer of protection.
  • Oil your scalp regularly.
  • Use braid sprays or hydrating spritzes to maintain moisture.

Why Hydrating Sprays Matter

While braids protect your natural hair, your hair still requires moisture.

A quality braid spray helps:

  • Prevent dryness
  • Keep braids smelling fresh
  • Reduce scalp irritation
  • Add softness and flexibility to the hair underneath

Washing Braids

Braids can be washed similarly to cornrows.

Use:

  • A hydrating shampoo
  • A hydrating conditioner
  • Lightweight mousse afterwards
  • Scalp oil once dry

This routine refreshes the scalp, reduces product buildup, and helps maintain a healthier environment for hair growth.

Why Satin Is Essential

Many people ask why satin is recommended so often.

Cotton pillowcases absorb moisture from your hair and create friction while you sleep. This friction contributes to:

  • Frizz
  • Dryness
  • Faster style deterioration
  • Hair breakage

Satin creates a smooth surface that allows your hair to glide rather than rub against fabric. This helps preserve moisture, minimise frizz, and extend the lifespan of your style.

Touch-Ups

As your natural hair grows, your style may begin to look less neat.

Regular maintenance appointments and touch-up services can significantly extend the life of your braids while keeping them looking fresh and polished.

Ponytails

Recommended wear time: 1–2 weeks

Ponytails create a sleek and elegant finish, but because the hair remains in a fixed position, they should not be worn for extended periods.

We generally recommend removal after 1–2 weeks to avoid unnecessary tension on the scalp and hairline.

Daily Maintenance

  • Brush the ponytail daily.
  • Use water and leave-in conditioner to lightly hydrate the hair.
  • Apply mousse as needed to maintain smoothness.
  • Detangle carefully using a detangling brush.
  • Always work from the ends upwards to avoid unnecessary shedding and tangling.

Edge Care

If you regularly lay your edges, avoid continuously layering new product over old product.

Instead:

  1. Gently cleanse your edges.
  2. Remove old gel and product buildup.
  3. Reapply fresh styling products.

This prevents flaking, caking, and excessive buildup around the hairline.

Lace Frontal Ponytails

If your ponytail includes a lace frontal, proper lace maintenance is extremely important.

Before bed:

  • Wrap barber paper around the lace area.
  • Apply your wig band over the barber paper.
  • Secure before sleeping.

This helps:

  • Protect the lace from darkening
  • Absorb sweat and natural oils
  • Extend the lifespan of the adhesive
  • Reduce residue buildup

We also recommend using rubbing alcohol to gently clean around the perimeter of the lace when appropriate. This prevents adhesive buildup and keeps the installation looking cleaner for longer.

Sew-Ins

Recommended wear time: 4–12 weeks

A well-maintained sew-in can last for several months while still looking beautiful. The key is prioritising scalp care, cleanliness, and regular maintenance.

Scalp Care

Oil your scalp regularly, but avoid over-saturating it.

Excessive oil can attract dirt and create product buildup, while too little moisture can lead to dryness and irritation.

The goal is balance.

Washing Your Sew-In

We recommend washing your sew-in approximately every two weeks.

When washing:

  1. Section your leave-out.
  2. Thoroughly cleanse your scalp.
  3. Use a scalp scrubber to reach the braided foundation beneath the extensions.
  4. Ensure the shampoo reaches every area of the scalp.
  5. Follow with conditioner where appropriate.
  6. Rinse thoroughly.

Protecting Your Leave-Out

Your leave-out requires special attention because it is regularly exposed to heat styling.

Always:

  • Apply a heat protectant before blow-drying.
  • Apply a heat protectant before straightening.
  • Keep heat usage to a minimum.

When straightening, aim for one controlled pass rather than repeatedly applying heat. Excessive heat exposure increases the risk of heat damage and breakage.

Drying Your Sew-In

Proper drying is one of the most important parts of sew-in maintenance.

Never leave your braided foundation damp.

If moisture remains trapped within the braids, it can contribute to:

  • Unpleasant odours
  • Scalp irritation
  • Excessive buildup
  • Potential fungal growth

If you do not have access to a hooded dryer, use a blow dryer and take your time. Ensure the braids underneath are completely dry before styling.
